Poland national coach, Michal Probierz resigned from his position on Thursday, 4 days after star striker, Robert Lewandowski said he will no longer play for the national team under him.
The 36-year-old Barcelona striker said his trust had been betrayed and he was badly hurt by the way Probierz told him he has been replaced as team captain
Lewandowski, who is Poland’s record goal-scorer, told the media on Monday that he received a short call from Probierz as he was putting his children to sleep and that a statement about him losing the captaincy appeared soon after on the Polish Football Association website.
Probierz decided to replace Lewandowski as captain with midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
Following the development, the coach said he came to the conclusion that the best decision for the good of the national team is for him to resign from the position
In a statement, Probierz thanked his colleagues, players, and fans for their support during his tenure.
The Polish FA also expressed gratitude for Probierz’s commitment and wished him success in his future career.
Probierz’s resignation comes after a mixed tenure, including a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign where Poland became the first team to be eliminated.
However, the team has shown promise in 2026 World Cup qualifications, earning 6 points from three games.
Lewandowski’s potential return could be a significant boost for Poland’s World Cup hopes.
