About 72 hours after leading the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has been arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

Sowore was arrested on Thursday shortly after leaving the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he met with the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, who is standing trial on charges bordering on alleged terrorism.

From an amateur video posted on social media, Sowore and members of his legal team were seen demanding from the officers the reason for the sudden arrest but they insisted that they were directed by the FCT Police Commissioner. He was eventually taken to the SARS headquarters in Guzape district of Abuja.

The 2023 African Action Congress, AAC presidential candidate was scheduled to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite over what he described as a “bogus and farcical” charge of alleged forgery of a police wireless message, filed under the instruction of the “Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun”, but was informed at the court that the judge would not be sitting.
