Police brutality: Edo state judicial panel of inquiry assures victims of justice

The chairman and members of the Edo state judicial panel of inquiry set up to receive and investigate complaints of brutality, human rights violations and extrajudicial killing in the state have assured members of the public that justice will be served to all aggrieved persons.

The chairman and members of the panel disclosed this while briefing journalists in Benin city on the modus operandi of the panel.

Some of the duties vested on the members of the Edo state judicial panel of inquiry include: to receive and investigate complaints of brutality by security agents, human rights violations or related extrajudicial killings in the state, recommend compensations and other remedial measures where appropriate, ascertain the officers responsible for the abuse of victims and recommend their prosecution where applicable. The panel is also expected to recommend to the Edo state government ways of ensuring that security agents no longer abuse the rights of citizens.

The chairman of the judicial panel of inquiry Retired Justice Ada Ehigiamusoe appealed to members of the public to provide necessary information to assist the panel to carry out its work effectively.

Some members of the Endsars protesters who are part of the judicial panel of inquiry assured justice for all victims of police brutality.

The panel has opened channels to receive complaints from members of the public from between ten o’clock in the morning to four PM every Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, while the receiving of petitions from petitioners will end in November Twenty-nine, Twenty-Twenty.
The Panel disclosed that it has so far received thirteen petitions.
