The Plateau State Police Command on Monday says about 32 cases of abuse against women and children was recorded in Plateau State between January and December, 2021.
Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department (Cid), in Plateau State, Felix Nnebue during a meeting with stakeholders for effective implementation of Gender Equality Law and Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act Organized by the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative for Legal and Social Empowerment on women’s rights in Plateau and Kaduna States.

According to Nnebue, the issues concerning abuse especially against women and children was high on the Police mandate.
“We are to protect lives and property and the issue of abuse is something that the police takes with high degree of seriousness and have been fighting against for a long time.”
The Assistant Police Commissioner expressed optimism that when the gender Commission is established and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act assented to by the Governor, it will go a long way in helping the Police to curb cases of violence against women and children in the state.
Plateau state Government passed into law the Gender Equal Opportunity Act in 2018 making it the first in Northern Nigeria, while Kaduna State passed the VAPP Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act in 2017.
