The Police Council has unanimously ratified the appointment of Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police.

The meeting, chaired by President Bola Tinubu, held on Monday at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where members endorsed Disu’s appointment without dissent, reflecting strong backing for the new leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Council, chaired by the President and comprises all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police, met in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act requiring it to consider and approve the appointment before transmission to the Senate.

Shortly after the brief meeting, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development to our State House correspondent, Yemi Adebayo.

With Monday’s ratification, Disu is expected to proceed to the Senate for subsequent screening and confirmation as substantive Inspector-General of Police.

Top government functionaries in attendance included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack, alongside several state governors and ministers.

Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. A native of Lagos Island, he holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University and master’s degrees in Public Administration as well as Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology.

He previously served under Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor between 1999 and 2007.

When confirmed by the Senate, Disu will become the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police.
