Operatives of the Nigerian Police in a joint operation with sister agencies have killed the Commander of IPOB militia group and some of his allies, in the early hours of Saturday.

Credible sources within the security community said that the agents stormed the operational headquarters of IPOB Militias in Awonmama, Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State by surprise.

It was gathered that the militia are responsible for the attacks on the Imo State Police Headquarters and that of the Nigerian Correctional Service on 5th April.

The sources also disclosed that the IPOB militias have also carried out series of calculated, violent attacks on security personnel and formations in the South-East and the South-South of the country, since the late 2020s.

The sources also informed that as the security forces approached the base of the militia, they came under rapid fire from the group.

As the exchange of gunfire ensued, there was heavy casualties on the side of the group, while four security operatives also sustained injuries.

Security operatives killed the overall commander of the militia in the South-East, commonly known as Commander Ikonso and six other armed fighters of the group.

Commander Ikonso is known as the Vice President-designate as well as the Coordinator of all the militia operations.

Ikonso is said to be the mastermind and coordinator of the attack on the Imo Police Headquarters and several other attacks on security and military personnel and facilities.

The security team recovered the remains of Commander Ikonso and six of his fighters.

Several sophisticated weapons including six AK47 rifles, hundreds of ammunition of different calibrer and lots of charms, including bullet proof, were recovered from the militias.
