The Police Service Commission (PSC) has promoted seven Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) to the rank of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) in a move aimed at strengthening the leadership structure of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the Commission, the promotions followed a rigorous process that included written examinations and oral interviews conducted on this Friday at the Commission’s corporate headquarters in Abuja.

Head of Protocol and Public Affairs at PSC Headquarters, Abuja, Torty Njoku said the promotions were based on merit, seniority, service records and performance during the assessment exercise.

The officers elevated to the rank of DIG are: Zachariah Fera Achinyan, formerly AIG in charge of Zone 4, Makurdi; Zango Ibrahim Baba, formerly AIG, Department of Logistics and Supply; Isyaku Mohammed, formerly AIG Armament at Force Headquarters, Abuja; Margaret Agebe Ochalla, formerly AIG, FCID Annex, Lagos; Mohammed Abdul Sulaiman, formerly AIG, Police Accounts and Budget at Force Headquarters; Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, formerly AIG Zone 15, Maiduguri; and Umar Shehu Nadada, formerly AIG Zone 14, Katsina.

The Commission said the promotions became necessary following vacancies created by the retirement of eight Deputy Inspectors-General of Police who previously occupied key positions in the Force.

The latest development also comes after the recent elevation of Fayoade Adegoke to the substantive rank of DIG, bringing him into the Force Management Team.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of the Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu, congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them.

Argungu charged the officers to uphold professionalism in the discharge of their duties, prioritise national security, and maintain a cordial and productive working relationship with the Commission to support the continued development of the police.

Members of the PSC Board who served as examiners during the promotion exercise included Paul Adamu Galumje, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court; Taiwo Lakanu, a retired DIG and Chairman of the PSC Standing Committee on Police Matters; and Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
