Police in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria have arrested and detained one of its personnel, a male Inspector of Police serving in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the Command.

The officer is alleged to have murdered the popular traditional Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, known by his stage name Igbo-Jah.

The incident reportedly occurred at 8:10 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s headquarters.

According to a statement from the spokesperson of the Enugu State Police Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the musician was leaving the Squad’s Headquarters after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet unknown, the police officer discharged his firearm, fatally wounding the victim.

The musician was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.

The Police PRO says the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State CID, to lead a comprehensive investigation to ensure prompt and appropriate disciplinary actions are taken against the officer involved.

“The Commissioner empathises and consoles the victim’s family, friends, and associates, describing the unfortunate incident as unacceptable. He assures that the Police officer and anyone else found culpable will be sanctioned in line with the law, to serve as a deterrent.

“CP Uzuegbu urges everyone connected to the victim to remain calm and cooperate with the Police to ensure that justice is served”, the statement reads.
