Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Monday joined youths in Benin City to protest the activities of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), citing persistent poor service delivery, estimated billing, and inadequate power supply across the state.
The governor described the grievances of the protesters as genuine, noting that unreliable electricity has continued to impose severe hardship on residents and businesses.
Addressing the demonstrators who gathered at Ring Road in the city centre, Governor Okpebholo urged them to remain peaceful while pressing home their demands for accountability and improved performance from BEDC.
He emphasized the need to end what he termed a monopoly in electricity distribution, advocating reforms that would promote competition, efficiency, and better service delivery.
Governor Okpebholo assured the youths that his administration would sustain engagement with relevant authorities and pursue lawful measures aimed at addressing the state’s power challenges and opening up the distribution sector for greater efficiency and fairness.
