Nigerian journalists must strive to overcome the challenges and hazards associated with the profession, to effectively discharge their duties as watchdogs of society.
This was emphasised by the Chairman of the Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), Asma’u Halilu, at an event to mark the 2024 NUJ Week.
The event officially kicked off the 2024 Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists press week.
Themed, “The Role of the Media in Holding Government Accountable: Emerging Challenges and Prospects,” the event aimed to raise awareness, about the challenges faced by journalists, while managing information, and fulfilling their responsibilities.

Asma’u Halilu, explained that journalists are confronted daily with issues such as fake news, quackery, professional competence, poor remuneration and harassment, among others.
She noted that these challenges make it difficult for an average Nigerian journalist, to hold elected or public office holders accountable, in the course of discharging their duties.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, congratulated the state’s NUJ on its Press Week, emphasising the media’s crucial role in holding the government accountable.
He urged the media to always uphold the truth.
Governor Uba Sani, further assured that the Kaduna State government will continue to work with the state’s chapter of the NUJ, to accelerate the growth and development of the state.
