The Forum of Commissioners of Power and Energy has raised an alarm over the country’s frequent grid collapses, calling for an urgent action to transform Nigeria’s electricity landscape.
Chairman of the Forum, Prince Eka Williams, who is also the Cross River State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, described the recurring collapses as a national crisis, disrupting lives and businesses with devastating economic and social impacts.
In a bold move, the Commissioners are pushing for state-driven solutions, including the establishment of state electricity markets to decentralize power generation, transmission, and distribution.
They say this approach will cater to the unique energy needs of individual states.
The Forum is also advocating for stronger, localized grid systems to reduce dependence on the national grid, alongside federal investments in modern grid technologies to stabilize operations.
The Forum is calling on the Federal Government, private investors, and international partners to join forces in delivering sustainable and resilient power sector.
