A fault on the 330kV Ugwaji-Apir Double Circuit transmission lines has caused a widespread power outage in the North-East, North-West, and parts of North-Central Nigeria.

According to a statement on Tuesday Morning by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, the tripping occurred at approximately 4:53am on Monday, resulting in total loss of 468 megawatts of power.

TCN explained that its emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to trace the fault along the 215-kilometre route, but challenging terrains and security concerns hindered their progress.

It added that as of this morning, supply has been restored to the 132kV transmission line from New Haven to Apir, but the 330kV lines remain out of service.

The TCN has apologised to the affected states and consumers, assuring that efforts are underway to locate and repair the fault.

The TCN says the outage has been compounded by the shutdown of the Shiroro-Mando transmission line due to security reasons, further impacting power supply in the Northern region.

TCN’s General Manager Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said “We sincerely apologise to the government and electricity consumers in all the affected states… We are making every effort to trace the cause of the outage to enable our engineers effect repairs and restore bulk power supply.”
