The Presidency has dismissed reports circulating on media platforms of leaked fiscal policy documents as unofficial and not approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
One of the documents, titled “Inflation Reduction and Price Stability (Fiscal Policy Measure etc) Order 2024,” is being shared as if it were an executive order signed by President Bola Tinubu. The other document, a 65-page draft titled “Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan (ASAP),” contains suggestions on how to improve the Nigerian economy.
A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on Thursday emphasized that neither document is an official policy document of the Federal Government, and both are still subject to reviews at the highest level of government.
The Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, emphasized that policymaking is an iterative process involving multiple drafts and discussions before any document is finalized.
The leaked documents have led to reports speculating on government policy regarding customs tariffs, fuel subsidy, and other economic matters.
Government has restated its position on fuel subsidy, reiterating that the fuel subsidy regime has ended and there is no provision for N5.4 trillion in 2024.
The Presidency urged the public and media to disregard the two documents and cease further discussions on them, pending comprehensive reviews and approvals.
