President Bola Tinubu has said that Nigeria Federal Government is fully committed to partner the Governors of the Lake Chad Basin Forum, and other stakeholders, to bring about a lasting peace, and stabilization in the region.

This was disclosed by Vice -President Kashim Shettima, who represented the President at the opening of the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, being hosted by the Yobe State Government, in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The Lake Chad Basin had hitherto been ravaged by over a decade of atrocities, posed by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.

The 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, themed: “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security and Sustainable Development, for a Resilient Community.”

President Tinubu said: “Let me assure this gathering that the present administration is determined to embrace partnership with African and International Communities, to end terrorism in the region”.

For his part, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, observed that the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, being hosted by his State Government in Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital, underscores their unity of purpose, and rekindling age-long standing brotherhood.

“As the largest stakeholder in the Lake Chad Basin, hosting 74% of the affected population, our leadership reflects a profound sense of responsibility to address the shared challenges that transcend borders.”

In their remarks, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno, and his counterpart from Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, commended security agencies, partners and development workers who have put in efforts in the ongoing stabilization, and resilience processes in the region.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, said it is not time for speech, but for action, calling for collective action to fix things in region.

“…we are determined to confront all the security challenges as together we shall succeed.”

Traditional rulers from across the region, humanitarian partners among other stakeholders, are attending the meeting, which is expected to end on Friday, 31st January, 2025.
