Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, says, for the nation to reclaim its past sporting glory, sports development must now begin at the primary school level, where numerous talents can be easily identified and nurtured.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the first National Council on Sports, holding in Enugu, on Wednesday, Tinubu reiterated his government’s commitment to investing in modern sports facilities, ensuring their maintenance, and accessibility.
The apex body on policy decisions in the Nigerian sports sector is holding its first meeting at the Old Governor’s Lodge in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria.
Stakeholders in sports development from across the country have gathered here to brainstorm on policy directions and development modules.

This council meeting being hosted by the Enugu State Government, is the first since the Ministry of Youths and Sports was de-merged by the Federal government.
Declaring the meeting open on behalf of President Bola Tinubu is the Minister of Special Duties, Zephaniah Jisalo.
He urged participants to explore innovative approaches and embrace global best practices.
Host Governor, Peter Mbah expresses the hope that the Council’s deliberations would deeply consider strategies to help Nigeria achieve excellence in sports.
Other speakers stressed the need for a political will, to implement outcomes from the meeting.
The 3-Day Council meeting with the theme; “Sports for National Unity and Socio-Economic Growth,” is expected to ratify policies to revolutionize sports administration and development in Nigeria, among other key decisions.
