President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman to the very core,” following news of his death in the United Kingdom on Sunday.

In an official statement from the State House signed by him, Tinubu reflected on Buhari’s decades of service to Nigeria, noting that his legacy of sacrifice and nation-building will endure for generations.

“He served Nigeria with unwavering dedication,” the President said. “First as a military leader from 1984 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life.”

President Tinubu praised Buhari’s calm strength, integrity, and strong belief in Nigeria’s potential, even in turbulent times.

He noted that the late President championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption boldly, and consistently placed national interest above personal ambition.

In a message of condolence, Tinubu extended heartfelt sympathies to Buhari’s widow, Aisha, his children, the entire Buhari family, and the people of Katsina State, particularly the Daura Emirate.

“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” Tinubu said.

As a mark of respect, the President ordered all national flags to fly at half-Mast for seven days and summoned an emergency Executive Council of the Federation meeting for Tuesday in Buhari’s honour.

He concluded with a prayer: “May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
