President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.

The President has also inaugurated a Presidential Committee on Livestock, made up of eminent Nigerians, including former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, who is to serve as Vice Chairman.

The livestock committee is expected to among other things, proffer solutions to the security challenges, posed by recurring herder-farmer clashes in the country.

The phrase, “farmer-herder conflict,” resonates across west Africa, including Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country.

The prolonged crisis has claimed scores of lives, and resulted in wanton destruction of lives and property.

Worried by the situation which many believe is partly responsible for the current food crisis in country, President Bola Tinubu has moved to proffer solutions, with the setting up of a new Ministry of Livestock Development.

While the president is yet to name a minister to take charge of the newly created ministry, former INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega is to serve as Deputy chairman of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee, which was inaugurated on Tuesday by the president, who chairs the committee.

Jega replaces APC’s National Chairman, Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, as AIT learnt that the President is moving to ensure that affairs of governance are insulated from politics.

Professor Attahiru Jega will only preside over the Presidential Livestock Committee, in the absence of the President and Commander-in-Chief.

The committee is mandated to provide sector-focused solutions, to address the age-long farmer-herder crisis.
