The Nigerian leader, President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the Government and people of Lagos State over the death of the Oba of Badagry, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, Oba Babatunde Akran.
The revered traditional ruler died on Monday at the age of 89.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commiserated with the Lagos State Traditional Council, where the late Monarch served as Permanent Vice Chairman, as well as the Badagry Council of Chiefs and the sons and daughters of the historic kingdom.
The President described Oba Babatunde as a visionary and purposeful leader, who provided more than four decades of steady leadership, fostering harmony, tolerance, unity and prosperity among his people.

President Tinubu also acknowledged the late Monarch’s role in protecting, preserving and projecting the historical importance of Badagry Kingdom, noted for its place in global history as a former slave harbour and route, as well as its rich cultural heritage that continues to attract international attention.
According to the President, Oba Babatunde demonstrated wisdom in balancing modernity with tradition, managing multicultural interests and safeguarding the sanctity of cultural institutions and icons for future generations.
The President further highlighted the Oba’s professional journey, noting that he worked as a teacher for many years before venturing into journalism, where he made notable contributions while serving in various capacities at the West African Pilot, Post Group of Newspapers, Daily Sketch and New Nigeria.
President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed Monarch and asked God to grant comfort to his family and the people of Badagry.
