President Bola Tinubu says his government is committed to addressing the about two hundred thousand shortage of primary school teachers, as he encourages state governments to support the federal in addressing teachers welfare, particularly their salaries.
The President was represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume at the 2024 Teachers day celebration in Abuja, where the representative of the FCT Minister, regretted the ongoing primary school teachers’ strike.
Felicia and her colleagues in the teaching profession in Nigeria expressed doubt that young persons will be willing to be teachers.

Despite the abysmal condition of Nigerian teachers, UNESCO says the country still needs about 200,000 more to address the shortage.
According to the Nigeria Union of Teachers, there are cases of two or just one teacher to a whole primary school.
While the government makes commitment, more than 90% of the incentives for teachers promised four years ago remain unimplemented.
