President Bola Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, extending his tenure for another five-year term.
Marwa, first appointed in January 2021 by the late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has led the NDLEA through a period marked by major drug interceptions, high-profile arrests, and strengthened nationwide anti-drug campaigns. His renewed term means he will remain in office until 2031.
A former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, Marwa is widely regarded for his long and accomplished military career, which includes serving as Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to the then Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, and later as Defence Adviser in Washington D.C. and at the United Nations. He also holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University.

Under his leadership, the NDLEA has recorded more than 73,000 arrests of drug traffickers and seized over 15 million kilogrammes of illicit substances, earning national and international commendation for tightening Nigeria’s drug enforcement system.
President Tinubu in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Marwa’s reappointment as a renewed expression of confidence in his commitment to dismantling drug networks and confronting drug abuse across the country.
“Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse. I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs, who are out to destroy our people, especially the young ones,” the President said.
The reappointment takes immediate effect
