President Tinubu swears in Acting CJN, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun

President Bola Tinubu wants the Judicial arm of government to continue to maintain and defend its independence, promote Justice, strengthen mechanism for integrity, discipline and transparency in the judicial sector.

President Tinubu who gave the advice when he swore in the Acting Chief of Justice of Nigeria, CJN Kudirat Kekere-Ekun on Friday in Abuja, also told judicial officers to pursue other reforms or initiatives to sustain public confidence in the judiciary.

The President said
Nigeria’s Supreme Court has come a long way since it was empowered by the1963 Republican Constitution to take over from the then judicial committee of the Privy Council as the highest court in the judicial hierarchy of the country.

He commended the judiciary for the crucial role it has played and continues to play in the evolution of the country by resolving complex legal conflicts even under the military and reshaping public policy that impact all segments of the Nigerian society .

The President expressed confidence in the new Acting Chief of Justice of Nigeria, describing her as a rare gem and one of the few if not the only one that has practiced in every court as a lawyer, Magistrate, High Court judge, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and in principle now clearly the highest court.

The President says, under her leadership, he expects the apex court to continue to play a critical role in the evolution of the constitutional democracy and shape up policies that impact all segments of the Nigerian society.

The just inaugurated Acting Chief of Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, in her address pledged to serve the country diligently, patriotically and selflessly in order to justify the confidence reposed in her.

The Acting Chief of Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who was called to the bar in 1981, is the second woman to hold the position after Justice Mariam Muktar Aloma who served as CJN from July 16, 2012 to November 20, 2014.

The Nigerian Senate is expected to confirm her appointment as substantive CJN in the coming days.
