President Bola Tinubu has cautioned media practitioners against amplifying the voices of terrorists and other criminal groups, warning that unverified reports, misinformation, and disinformation could undermine national security.
Speaking at the annual Presidential Press Corps Dinner in Abuja, on Thursday evening, the President urged journalists to uphold the ethics of the profession by reporting accurately and responsibly, stressing that while press freedom remains a cornerstone of democracy, it must be exercised with a strong sense of responsibility.
He expressed concern over the growing spread of fake news, and digital manipulation, urging the media to choose facts over falsehood, credibility over sensationalism and avoid becoming willing couriers of information capable of threatening national peace and security.
On the security situation, President Tinubu said intensified military operations, improved intelligence gathering, stronger inter-agency collaboration and expanded regional cooperation have led to the neutralisation of thousands of terrorists and other criminal elements, the rescue of numerous hostages and the recovery of communities previously under threat.
