Pro-democracy group warns NLC against protest over electricity, fuel price hikes

A Pro-Democracy group, Coalition for Good Governance and Change Initiative has warned the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, to reverse its planned nationwide protest over the twin hikes of electricity tariffs and fuel, or face legal action, as well as counter protest.

The group made this known while staging a protest in Abuja.

The twin hikes of electricity tariffs and pump price of petrol by the Federal government has been of great concern for many Nigerians who believe that the decision came at a time when the world is yet to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic’s harsh economic reality.

The development has prompted the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to issue the Buhari-led government an 11-day deadline to reverse its decision or face a nationwide indefinite strike and mass protest from September 28.

But on the flipside, a Pro-democracy group, Coalition for Good Governance and Change Initiative has kicked against the union’s position, saying that it will increase more hardship on Nigerians.

It advises the NLC to go back to the negotiating table with the Federal government to arrive at a possible solution that will benefits all the parties involved.

The group asked the federal govt to prevail on the electricity distribution companies to meter every household in Nigeria at no cost to consumers, as it is the property of the companies

It expressed worry over the ranking of Nigeria as the 3rd most terrorised country in the world and urged President Muhammad Buhari to step up the war against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, to avoid overtaking Afghanistan and Iraq, in the global index.
