Medical and other activities have been disrupted for two days by separate protests at the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital in Uburu, Ebonyi State.

The protest which targeted the management of the institution reportedly erupted on Monday morning was said to involve locals of the host community, Uburu, led by their traditional rulers.

Sources claim that the protesters alleged several wrongdoings against the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Uzoma Agwu, accusing her of gross mismanagement, systemic abuse, leadership failure and disregard to the host community.

AIT could not however independently verify this incident.

But, barely 24 hours, on Tuesday both staff and management of the Teaching Hospital, marched in solidarity with the CMD and his management team, describing the allegations by some members of the host community as “ill informed, unsubstantiated and baseless.”

The Publicity Secretary of DUFUTH Staff Welfare Association, Jideofor Ibekwe lamented the negative impact of the blockage of the entrance to the hospital by some protesting individuals from the host community.

Ibekwe also complained that a major challenge facing the hospital is power supply, as the management spend huge funds in servicing power supply in the facility hospital and wants Federal government’s urgent action.

Though normalcy appears to have returned to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Uburu an air of uneasy calm exist between the University and her host community.
