Late Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi

The death of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other government officials in the helicopter crash on Sunday can be described as unfortunate and tragic with unpredictable backlash in the Iranian polity.

The vice president of the country takes over the affairs of governance in the next 50 days as stipulated in the Iranian constitution before a fresh election to elect a new president will be held

But will the death of late president Raisi change the geo politics of Iran? ait.live’s diplomatic correspondent takes a look at what to expect in the coming days.

Iranians are mourning the death of the President Ebrahim Raisi.

In the next few days, after the grieving, comes the dawn of reality. Where does the political future of Iran lie following the irreversible cessation of all biological functions that sustain a living organism?

A foreign Affairs analyst Innocent Odoh believes a replacement of Raisi after the Election would be a loyal candidate to the supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini and predicted there may not be significant changes in the space of governance

The analyst says the foreign policy of the late president Raisi will greatly be missed particularly in building relationship with other countries and the understanding with them.

Global leaders have continued to react to the death of President Raisi whom they described as an outstanding politician and a friend to many

On Sunday, 19th of May 2024, one of the three Helicopter in a convoy crashed amid heavy fog . Raisi was in the ill-fated helicopter.

He was heading to the city of Tabriz, in the north-west of Iran, after returning from a dam opening ceremony on the Azerbaijan border.

Iranian authorities say one victim, an imam, survived for an hour and tried to call for assistance at the scene of the accident .

President Raisi was a hardline cleric close to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Also on board were Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Al-e Hashem, the imam for Friday prayers in the city of Tabriz, and General Malek Rahmati, the governor of the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan.

The commander of the president’s protection unit, Sardar Seyed Mehdi Mousavi, was also killed, as were a number of bodyguards and helicopter crew.
