Nigeria’s House of Representatives on Wednesday asked the Ministry of Education to ensure that relevant Government Agencies prioritise the employment of first-class graduates from Nigerian Institutions.
This followed a motion on the need for first class graduates to be granted automatic employment in government parastatals.
The lawmakers are concerned at the growing rate at which employable First-Class graduates of Universities are rendered jobless, while the lower grades whose relations are connected, get employed.
They believe that such automatic offer of a job for first-class graduates, will be a source of motivation for students in all fields to work harder.

Members say Nigeria’s inability to leave the status of a “developing nation”, may be as a result of the lack of political will of policy makers to introduce a reward system for best brains who will automatically occupy important positions according to their area of competence.
Some lawmakers however expressed their reservations over the motion, advising that it will be impactful if it is presented as a Bill.
