For the severe brutality meted to a 22 year old cyclist by a soldier in Bayelsa state, the sum of eleven million Naira has been awarded against the Nigerian Army, as compensation to the victim.

This and others, were among recent rulings handed down at the ongoing Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up by the Bayelsa State Government to investigate acts of police brutality and other related offences in Yenagoa, state capital.

For reasons yet to be ascertained till date, twenty two year old Obebadol Ebuwanighe was in the year 2019 brutalized by a soldier who reportedly shaved and severally slashed his head with a razor, while another held him down at gun-point inside their security post.

The Bayelsa State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality after hearing the matter gave judgment ordering the Nigerian Army to pay the native of Otuasegha Community in Ogbia Council Area, the sum of eleven million naira as compensation for the trauma he suffered.

Earlier, the panel in two separate rulings awarded the sum of sixteen and fifteen million naira respectively to the families of a four-year-old boy as well as a twenty-nine-year-old man both killed by a policeman, Okoro Azu in a reckless shooting incident.

The panel also recommended that criminal prosecution be brought against the officer of the defunct Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS), who previously had been indicted in an Orderly Room trial set up by the Nigeria Police.
