Human rights and pro-democracy group, Concerned Nigeria, have condemned the siege by soldiers and police officers at the hotel of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and other Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, leaders in Benin City, ahead of the gubernatorial election in Edo State.

In a statement, the group’s convener, Deji Adeyanju, described the act as an interference of the Edo governorship election and asked the international community to take note of the political tactics for further investigation.

The group pointed out that the All Progressives Congress, APC, governors and their entire National Working Committee are in the state preparing for the election without any hindrance by security operatives and insisted that Governor Wike as the Director-General of the opposition party’s campaign body, including other PDP leaders, all have the rights to participate in the polls.

The convener said the clampdown gives undue advantage to the APC rigging the election and noted that security agencies should be neutral to ensure free, fair, and credible polls.

Adeyanju told President Muhammadu Buhari to decide if he wants the nation’s democracy to continue or he wants to declare full military rule.

He urged him to put an end to fraudulent elections.
