HYPREP

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project HYPREP has been slammed for executing substandard projects in one of its sites at Ogale clan in Eleme local government area of Rivers State.

The Ogale people who staged a peaceful protest to the HYPREP’s remediation location knocked the clean up agency for backfilling on the land after excavating it, which they say will cause serious environmental damage to the community; demanding that HYPREP should carry out professional engineering remediation work.

Lending his voice to the agitations of his people, his Royal highness the Egbere Emere Okori one of Eleme Apolus Chu, expressed disappointment over HYPREP’s insincerity towards its host community, emphasizing that several letters have been written to the appropriate authorities to look into their grouse but there was no response.

He also said HYPREP had failed to endorse the memoranda of understanding MOU it entered into with them.

The Egbere Emere of Eleme further explained that the substandard operational activities of HYPREP at Ogale is a death trap to the people, and charged HYPREP to do the right thing in order to avoid environmental degradation.

Ogale is among the communities in Rivers State polluted by crude oil exploration that were captured in the UNEP report.
