RIVERS State

Ishiukwa people in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State have called on the State government to construct a road that will connect the community to Ndoni to aid the transportation of their farm produce to other parts of the State.

They said the only available road in the area has not been motorable for decades and that they will soon lose their status as the biggest yam market in the State because of the poor state of the road which has affected their businesses negatively.

Rivers state is considered one of Nigeria’s treasure base with oil and gas resources.

But apart from oil, the people of Ishiukwa in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area pride themselves as the food basket of the state with the largest yam, Potato, Okro and Pepper produce in the State.

The market day comes every four days but despite the huge harvests every year, farmers are confronted with the difficult challenge of transporting their wares to other parts of the state as a result of lack of link roads.

Locals called on the Rivers State government to look in their direction and provide them with motorable roads and other social amenities to enhance their productivity.

This was as residents lamented being abandoned by the Nigerian Agip Oil company despite the company making so much money from oil explorations on their land.

Ishiukwa people and others Communities along the banks of the River Niger are predominantly farmers and fishermen.
