Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara says besides building roads and bridges across the state, his main ambition is to build and education system that will produce graduates who will immediately become self-employed and employers of labour; instead of coming out to depend on government or go about the streets looking for jobs.
Governor Fubara, while inaugurating the governing councils of three of the state-owned tertiary institutions also noted that there is no way the society can grow if attention is not focused on building purposeful and creative education system.
As one who benefited fully from the state sponsored education system, Governor Fubara is worried about how the standard of education in the state and country has fallen.
And instead of crying over “spilt milk,” the governor has chosen to work to ensure that the standard is raised, and graduates produced to meet the needs of Nigeria in the 21st century and can be self-employed.
Another issue the governor would like to address is the disturbing culture of cultism and youths restiveness.
The also Governor approved the re-employment of academic and non-academic staff at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education on the basis of the initial approval of a higher percentage of academic staff.
He urged the governing council of the institution to ensure that the employment exercise is based strictly on merit.
