Rivers State Executive Council has approved the employment of 5,000 workers into the state civil service.
This was announced at the end of Tuesday’s State Executive Council meeting, which is the second in 2026.
The government says the move is aimed at strengthening service delivery in the state, particularly in the education sector.
Presided over by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the council considered several key issues, with the approval of additional recruitment into the civil service topping the agenda.
With this latest approval, the total number of persons employed by the Fubara administration will stand at 9,500.
The government says the initiative is part of broader efforts to create job opportunities for the state’s teeming youth population, adding that it is also partnering with the private sector to expand employment opportunities for Rivers indigenes.
The Fubara administration has assured that the recruitment process will be transparent and merit-based, stressing that politics will not influence the exercise and that only qualified candidates will be employed.
