As Muslims prepare for the Eid el Kabir celebration, residents of Osun State are expressing concerns over the soaring prices of rams and goats.
livestock sellers and buyers say prices have more than doubled even as demand remains low.
Described as one of the most important festivals in Islam Eid el Kabir is marked by prayers, feasting and the symbolic slaughter of rams or goats.
But in Osun State, the high cost of livestock is casting a shadow over the celebration as sellers do not see the usual patronage.
At the popular Osogbo livestock market, dealers lament that supply has dropped significantly compared to 2024 especially from neighbouring countries like Niger and Mali contributing to a sharp rise in prices.
Buyers say the price of an average ram has jumped from ₦400,000 last year to as much as ₦600,000 this season which many say is simply unaffordable.
It is the hope of sellers that they will see customers a few hours to the celebration, while buyers are hoping that prices will reduce.
