The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has elected a new national leadership during its convention in Bauchi State.
At the event, the party’s presidential candidate, Adewale Adebayo, cautioned Nigerians against the dangers of a one-party system and urged citizens to join the movement to rescue the nation from bad governance.
Delegates from all 36 states and the FCT converged on the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi to decide the party’s future.
Declaring m the convention, Usman Bugaje lauded the resilience of members who traveled despite the country’s biting economic hardships, citing high fuel prices, decaying infrastructure, and the rising cost of living.
He called on professionals and religious leaders to stop sitting on the sidelines and participate in politics to restore integrity to governance.

The election saw the emergence of a new National Working Committee, led by Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe. In his acceptance speech, Gombe acknowledged the gravity of Nigeria’s current challenges, promising that the SDP would provide a transparent and accountable alternative to the status quo.
The highlight of the event was the affirmation of Adewale Adebayo as the party’s presidential candidate, emerging unopposed through a voice vote.
Addressing the crowd alongside Dauda Gamawa, Adebayo pledged to prioritize national cohesion and security. He warned that the subtle push toward a one-party state threatens the country’s democracy, insisting that Nigeria belongs to all citizens, not a privileged few.
Goodwill messages from the Afenifere group, Musa El-Buba, and other political parties echoed this sentiment, stressing that the country is in urgent need of systemic changes
The convention concluded peacefully, with party leaders commending Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, for providing a secure and enabling environment for the exercise.
