The Nigerian Senate has amended Order 8(2) of its Standing Rules to adjust its sitting time to 11am-3pm during plenary sessions.
The change follows a debate on a motion sponsored by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele.
Senator Bamidele explained that the amendment aims to synchronise the Senate’s sitting time with that of the House of Representatives, considering the extensive responsibilities of lawmakers.
However, former President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan argued that the existing 10am-2pm sitting time should be maintained, as it allows committees to be more effective.
The debate led to a closed session, according to President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio that some matters required confidential discussion to avoid misquotation.
After the closed session, the Senate approved the amendment, mandating the Clerk of the Senate to reprint the Senate Standing Rules with the updated change.
