The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 gave its approval for the adoption of “Nigeria, We Hail Thee ….” as the country’s new national anthem.
This decision followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Joint Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, as well as the Federal Character, presented by Senator Tahir Mungono.
In his presentation, Senator Mungono stated that after a public hearing, the Committee carefully analyzed the presentations made and ensured they aligned with the provisions of the bill.
He emphasized that the rendition and musical precision of the old national anthem will inspire patriotism, cooperation, and integration, which are essential for national unity.
The passage of the Bill is expected to provide a platform for the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to sensitize citizens on the country’s core value system.
The lawmaker stressed that adopting the old national anthem will preserve and promote Nigeria’s cultural heritage for future generations.
The approved Bill is now awaiting Presidential assent.
