The Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Matters has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant full autonomy to the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, to enable it operate more efficiently in the discharge of its statutory responsibilities.
The committee made the recommendation during an oversight visit to the NDIC Zonal Office in Owerri, Imo State, as part of its mandate to monitor, assess, and evaluate the operations and performance of the corporation across the country.
Speaking on behalf of the committee chairman, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, Senator Osita Izunaso expressed satisfaction with the activities and level of compliance observed at the Owerri zonal office.

He assured management and staff that the Senate would look into the challenges confronting the zone, with a view to strengthening the institution’s capacity to protect depositors and maintain stability in the financial system.
With the call for NDIC’s autonomy now before the presidency, stakeholders remain hopeful that the move will further enhance depositor confidence and contribute to a more resilient and stable banking sector.
