The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it has received two communications from the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, declaring the seats for Bayelsa Central and Bayelsa West Senatorial Districts vacant.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made this known to reporters during the Commission’s first meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, in 2020 at its headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Yakubu said the two senatorial seats declared vacant by the Senate President followed the issuance of certificates of return to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Douye Diri, and his Deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who were both serving senators before the Supreme Court judgement.

The Commission also made public dates for party primaries for Edo and Ondo elections as well as dates for the conduct of court ordered rerun and by-elections to fill vacancies in some states and federal constituencies.

Recall that the INEC had released the timetable and schedule of activities for the Edo and Ondo governorship elections to be held on September 19 for Edo State and October 10, 2020, for Ondo State.

The Commission, however, said the personal particulars of all the candidates nominated by political parties for the Edo and Ondo governorship elections, including their academic qualifications, would be displayed in its offices in the two states as required by law, to enable citizens scrutinise them and take legal action against any candidate who provides false information to the Commission.

It added that the personal particulars of candidates would be displayed on July 6, 2020, in Edo State and on August 4, 2020, in Ondo State.
