Senate President gives Sahara Reporters 7 days to tender apology

The Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, and Senator Mohammed Sani Musa, from Niger state, has given an online publication, Sahara Reporters
seven days ultimatum to retract and tender an apology over an alleged false publication on the reappointment of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Counsel for both parties Ahmed Raji, in the letter dated November 20, 2020, said his clients deny in its entirety the contents of the publication and the said publication is utterly false and defamatory therefore demanded for an apology from Sahara Reporters on the offensive report.

In its report of November 18, 2020, Sahara Reporters published a report with the headline: ”How INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, allegedly Paid N3b To Secure Reappointment”.

In the publication, the Online medium said a group led by the Senate President collected the sum of N2b from the INEC Chairman and another N1b through another group.

The payment of the money was also said to be aided by Senator Sani Musa.

Raji also said apart from the retraction of the publication Sahara reporter is also to enter into negotiation for damages.
