The Nigerian Senate has set-up a 19-member Ad-hoc Committee to oversee the activities of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Sole Administrator appointed to manage the State, following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in the area.
The Committee, chaired by the Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) with Senate Minority Whip, Rufai Hanga (NNPP, Kano Central) as Vice Chairman, is tasked with monitoring the implementation of Federal directives, ensuring legal compliance by the caretaker administration, and safeguarding public interest, while working toward the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State.
The Committee will also focus on reconciliation efforts among stakeholders in Rivers and other affected regions, with the aim of addressing the root causes of unrest and promoting national unity.

The setting up of the Senate oversight ad-hoc Committee move follows the National Assembly’s resolution approving the presidential proclamation of Emergency Rule in Rivers State.

Lawmakers also said approved the composition of oversight Committee is to maintain the principle of checks and balances in the running of the affairs of Rivers State under an Emergency rule administration.
