The Senate has called on the Federal Ministry of Works to use contingency funds and the Service Wide Vote from the Ministry of Finance for the urgent repair of the Zungeru Bridge to prevent its collapse.
The resolution follows a Motion by Senator Sani Musa, representing Niger East, who highlighted the deteriorating condition of the bridge and the urgent need for repairs.
The Motion received support from fellow Senators, who urged relevant Ministries and Agencies to conduct structural assessments of the bridge and implement measures to prevent further deterioration.
Senator Musa emphasized that the Zungeru Bridge is a vital Federal infrastructure, providing crucial access across the Kaduna River.
He noted that due to its poor condition, traffic has been diverted to an old bridge originally intended for railway use, which now accommodates both rail and vehicle traffic.
Senator Musa warned that if urgent action is not taken to address this infrastructural issue, the ongoing use of the old bridge could lead to severe social and economic consequences, further exacerbating insecurity and disrupting national supply chains, and impacting negatively on the well-being of citizens.
