The Senate has passed a vote of confidence in the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio and the entire leadership of the 10th Senate.
The decision followed a Motion moved by Senator Yahaya Abdullahi of Kebbi North, invoking Senate rules regarding privilege and personal explanation in response to alleged impeachment plots by some Northern Senators.
Senator Abdullahi argued that these allegations compromised his privilege and aimed to create division within the Senate.
He highlighted that elections were held over a year and eight months ago, during which Akpabio’s leadership has led to significant advancements.
The lawmaker also stressed that, as a Northern Senator, he felt unjustly targeted by these claims.
Abdullahi clarified that, to his knowledge, no Northern Senator had sought to undermine the legitimacy of the Senate President or his efforts.

Condemning attempts to sow discord, he noted the effective collaboration between Northern and Southern Senators, warning that such divisive tactics could impede democracy and governance.
He urged his colleagues to stand united under Akpabio’s leadership to preserve the unity established over the past eighteen months.
Senator Abdul Ningi echoed these concerns, suggesting that external forces were attempting to create friction between Northern Senators and Akpabio.
He affirmed the cooperative spirit among Senators and dismissed the rumors as baseless.
Ningi advocated channels for addressing any grievances directly rather than through speculations.
He proposed strengthening their Vote of Confidence in the Senate leadership, labeling the notion of Northern opposition to Akpabio as a form of blackmail.
The matter was subsequently put to a voice vote by Akpabio and was unanimously adopted.
This is the first Vote of Confidence passed on Akpabio’s leadership since his inauguration after navigating two impeachment scares.
