The Secretary to the Government of the Federal, George Akume, has inaugurated a 15-member committee to work out modalities for the celebration of Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary.
During the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, the SGF said the anniversary is another opportunity to reflect and remember the contributions of Nigerians who have made sacrifices for the unity and development of the country.
On October 1, 1960, Nigeria attained independence from her former colonial masters, great Britain.
Since then, the country has gone through multidimensional challenges beginning with the civil war and most recently, terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry.
The economy has also not fared better, as most Nigerians live below the poverty level.
Though some successes have been recorded in infrastructure development, education, ICT, and the entertainment industry, many believe that a lot more could have been achieved.

Of note, however, is that Nigeria has had an uninterrupted democracy from 1999 till date which calls for celebration.
The SGF says it is a period to remember patriotic Nigerians both civilians and the military that have made sacrifices for the unity and growth of the country.
The secretary to the government of the federal gave an insight into what the anniversary planning committee is expected to do.
The committee is expected to come up with a holistic package that would depict the cultural diversity and unity of Nigeria.
