South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
Adams’ passing was confirmed by South Africa’s Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture and the South African Football Players’ Union (SAFPU), with tributes pouring in from across the football fraternity.
No official cause of death has been disclosed, while authorities and the player’s family have appealed for privacy during this difficult period.
The gifted midfielder had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured prominently in Bafana Bafana’s historic campaign.
Adams started the group-stage matches against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming off the bench in the victory over South Korea that secured South Africa’s first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.
Their journey eventually ended with a Round of 32 defeat to Canada.
Away from the national team, Adams enjoyed a rapid rise in South African football. After emerging through the ranks at Stellenbosch FC, he joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025 and played a key role in the club’s successful 2025/26 CAF Champions League campaign.
He also earned 13 senior international caps and scored two goals for South Africa during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.
Messages of condolence have continued to pour in from football stakeholders, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, South African government officials, the Premier Soccer League and Mamelodi Sundowns, all paying tribute to a player widely regarded as one of the country’s brightest young talents.
Jayden Adams is remembered not only for his composure and quality in midfield, but also for his humility, professionalism and unwavering commitment to the game.
His untimely passing is a profound loss to South African football and to the wider African sporting community.
