South Korea’s main opposition party, which vowed to impeach Acting President Han Duck-Soo, has delayed its decision, now moving to wait until later in the week, amid rising political tensions.

The Democratic Party (DP), which has a majority in parliament, is taking the step after Han postponed signing legislation to launch a Special Counsel investigation into President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed bid to impose martial law in the country.

Opposition Democratic Party (DP) floor leader Park Chan-dae said at the Parliament in Seoul on Tuesday that the party will wait until December 26th to decide whether to go ahead with the plan to impeach Han.

“We have decided to exercise patience, taking into account the sentiments of the people, and wait until the 26th to determine whether our demands are met,” DP floor leader Park Chan-dae stated.

The move to impeach Han comes as the country is recovering from impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol’s short-lived bid to impose martial law on Dec. 3, a bid Yoon has partly blamed on the opposition’s propensity to impeach government officials.

Prime Minister Han took over from Yoon, who was impeached on December 14 and is currently facing investigations and a Constitutional Court review on whether to oust him or restore his powers.
