The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, (NASU), have threatened to embark on strike if the Federal Government fails to honour the 2022 agreement reached with the unions.
The Chairman of the Committee at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Yunusa Mohammed, said this during a one-day protest to press home their demands.
They began with prayer which sets the tone for the protest by members of SSANU and NASU, demanding payment of earned allowances, and the implementation of other pending agreements with the Federal Government.
The protesters marched through the university campus, chanting solidarity songs, and carrying placards with various inscriptions.
The Chairman of the Joint Action Committee, Yunusa Mohammed, said the unions have been patient with the government, despite repeated delays in fulfilling its promises.
He notes that the unions are aware of the hardship caused by industrial actions, but maintains that a strike remains their last resort when dialogue fails.
The protest, which was held simultaneously across several universities, aims to remind the government of its outstanding commitments to non-teaching staff in the tertiary education sector.
The unions say they are ready to continue engagement with the authorities, but insist that concrete action, not promises, will determine their next move.
