The nationwide indefinite strike declared by Organised Labour over new national minimum wage offer of N60,000 by the Federal Government has recorded full compliance in port Harcourt, Rivers State, South-South Nigeria.
The gate to the ever busy Federal Secretariat was shut as few workers seen outside were not allowed access to the premises. The only office that was open was that of the Nigeria Immigration Service but no work was taking place.
When AIT.live visited the Rivers State Secretariat, it was like a ghost town, as labour leaders were seen asking few workers around to go home. The judiciary was also not spared as the Court of Appeal complex was under lock and key as well as the corporate headquarters of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHED.
The enforcement team of the Nigeria labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC said the strike became imperative as the Federal Government has failed the people.
Students of public schools were asked to go home as only those writing the ongoing West African Examinations Council WAEC exam were asked to stay.
The ongoing indefinite strike by Organised Labour has recorded full compliance in Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria as activities at the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, state and federal secretariats, banks, schools and other institutions have been shutdown.
Speaking to journalists in Yenagoa, the leadership of Unions called on the Federal Government to go back to the negotiation table as workers no longer want minimum wage but a living wage.
In Edo State, South-South Nigeria, labour leaders this Monday monitored compliance with the nationwide strike across Benin metropolis.
The unions shutdown various government offices including the Edo State Secretariat along Sapele Road, State High Court, and the Edo State House of Assembly complex. Also closed down by the labour leaders were the Benin airport, schools and financial institutions, and filling stations among others.
And following the ongoing strike embarked upon by Organised Labour, federal workers in Oyo State, South-West Nigeria have fully complied with the action.
AIT.live monitored activities at the Federal Secretariat in Ibadan and observed that all ministries have been shutdown except for emergency workers like the Federal Fire Service.
A top official of the Fire Service, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated that it was necessary for them to be on duty as a paramilitary body in case of emergency situations.
Meanwhile, at the Oyo State Secretariat, there was partial compliance with the strike as the gate remains open, allowing workers to enter freely.
