A proposed mass protest against the state government by the Taraba State University students over the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) of their school has been suspended by the students.
Leaders of the student union body in the institution said the suspension is to give the state government and ASUU, a window period for further dialogue.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities of the Taraba State University embarked on an indefinite strike on December 5, disrupting academic activities, including the ongoing end-of-session examinations.
The body cited unmet demands, such as failure to be captured in the implemented minimum wage in the state, lack of a pension scheme and other unresolved issues.
Frustrated and stranded by the development, students of the Taraba State University, planned a mass street peaceful demonstration to protest their concerns on the action.
However, a few hours before the protest, the leaders of the student union body suspended the demonstration, after a meeting in the premises of the university.
They said the suspended protest is to give the state government and ASUU two more days, to resolve burning issues, and to allow the students to round up the academic session.
Some of the students commended the fifty percent slash in the tuition fees of all students of tertiary institutions in the state, as well as the recent setup of the Ministry of Tertiary Education by the State Government.
