The Ebonyi State chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has ordered teachers in 7 Local Government Areas of the State to proceed on indefinite strike, over the failure of some Council Chairmen to clear the backlog of their salaries.

The Union in a Press Statement, signed by the State Secretary, Comrade Bassey Asuquo, notes that the industrial action is sequel to their earlier Notice on mobilization, noting that a thorough review on compliance of the 13 Local Government Chairmen regarding the clearance of the members’ salaries as at the close of work on Thursday, February 5, 2025 showed that 7 out of the 13 LGAs have not met the payment.

The Statement explained that in response to the non-compliance, teachers in the affected Council Areas have been directed to embark on indefinite strike, until they are paud the outstanding salaries and emoluments.

But, there is no official statement from the Ebonyi State government and the Association of Local Government Areas of Nigeria (ALGON) in the State on the development.

A source close to the State government told ait.live in Abakaliki that a meeting had been scheduled for Friday, after an earlier one called by the State Commissioner for Education on Thursday could not hold due to the absence of NUT leadership.

The scheduled meeting is expected to resolve the issues, leading to calling off of the strike.
