Tension mounts in parts of Enugu metropolis and other areas of Enugu State, South-East Nigeria, Monday as suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB returned to the streets to enforce the long suspended Monday’s sit-at-home order.

Residents doing businesses in areas such as Topland, Mayor, Agbani road, Amaechi – Akwanawa road, NOWAS in Trans-Ekulu area and Abakpa, said there were sporadic shootings by some hoodlums who tried to enforce Monday’s sit-at-home order.

The hoodlums who violently disrupted vehicular movements along the busy Enugu – Porthacurt expressway, burnt a tricycle and a commuter Sienna bus, destroyed several other vehicles.

Their action forced residents who came out for their daily activities to scamper for safety.

A source at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area which hosts the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT told AIT that suspected IPOB militias were behind the chaos.

The Police in Enugu said it has restored order and normalcy to the areas.

A statement by the State Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe urged citizens to go about their legitimate duties without fears of intimidation.

The proscribed IPOB through its spokesperson, Emma Powerful had announced the suspension of the regular sit-at-home civil action, which the separatist group had earlier ordered to be observed in the South East region of the country as a strategy to mount pressure on the Nigerian government to release its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu from the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.
